Leonard Susskind | TEDxCaltech: Feynman's... →
One of the great moments at this past January’s CalTech TEDx was Lenny Susskind’s reminiscence of his times spent with Feynman. There was something particularly sweet and fitting about sitting in Feynman’s old stomping grounds (the auditorium at CalTech) listening to Susskind (and others) that day.

Radiation Math Doesn't Add Up Well for Workers
Doesn’t this mean that no one could stay in the Reactor area for more than 15 minutes ((250 ms/ 1,000 ms) x 1 hour) without being exposed to a level of radiation judged to be “acceptable” only in this emergency (and 2.5x the level normally judged acceptable)??? “Over the weekend a worker trying to measure radiation levels of the water at Reactor No. 2 saw the...

News Desk: The “Kill Team” Photographs : The New... →
“In long, unsuccessful wars, in which the enemy—the people trying to kill you—do not wear uniforms and are seldom seen, soldiers can lose their bearings, moral and otherwise. The consequences of that lost bearing can be hideous. This is part of the toll wars take on the young people we send to fight them for us. The G.I.s in Afghanistan were responsible for their actions, of course. But it...

Android partners furious at Honeycomb delays -... →
Google said it was holding back on general release of Honeycomb’s open source code because it still had “more work to do” before the OS was ready for “other device types including phones”. But this is not just about reuniting Android, with a single version applicable to small and large screens. Many Android supporters want to use it for tablets, just like Motorola and...

Are you in a Mobile Technology Mixed Marriage?
Looks like I’m about to join the group of folks who operate across different mobile OS’s… I love my Android phone (well, REALLY like it…) and am a big supporter of the Google “open” movement… And I hadn’t jumped in to the tablet fray yet, hoping that the XOOM would be the answer for me. However, after reading the initial reviews of the XOOM, it...

Obstetricians take big steps to avoid malpractice... →
Delivering babies can be a high-stakes undertaking for hospitals, with the threat of multi-million-dollar malpractice damages when serious mishaps occur. But a team of Manhattan obstetricians says it has beaten the odds—dramatically reducing errors and slashing their department’s medical malpractice payouts by more than 99%. “Any hospital could do it—it’s not about money, it’s...

The ACE: Food printing →
the-ace: Boingboing had a new video on some potatoe 3d printer so I thought it was time for a bit of a round of up on the state of food printing. We are still far away from the utopian star trek ideals of our precious molecule replicators but day by day new amazing advances come our way. There’s…

Comcast's Roberts: "What used to be called... →
Methinks Brian Roberts protests too much. I.e., the joke seems to belie more of a concern at Comcast about Netflix’s growing importance than I would have otherwise expected (particularly from Roberts). Might have been better just to acknowledge that Netflix has done a fine job for what they are (see Stewart’s note above), and reinforce the fact that they are not a provider of live...
